600 sq mi : Hidden

060109_hidden.jpg

OK, photographers: You have one week left to submit your entries for 600 sq mi: Hidden, Houstonist's second biennial photo show. Don't say we didn't warn you.

600 sq mi: Hidden is a juried show that will reflect some of the things we love about our hometown: its hidden corners, unknown places, overlooked people, the things that make Houston a truly wonderful city for anyone who bothers to scratch the surface a bit. We all have our favorite bits of hidden Houston — and this is your chance to show us yours. The show is open to anyone, so don't give us the "But I'm not a professional!" speech. We want to see your work.

And luckily, we've made it super easy to enter. Just head over to the show's website, 600sqmi.com, for all the info you'll need: instructions, rules, the official entry form, FAQs and a link where you can contact us with questions/concerns. A $15 entry fee covers up to three images (and no, you can't pay another $15 and send us another three photos — sorry!).

The deadline for submitting your photos is 11:59 p.m. Monday, July 13. We're looking forward to an amazing show!

Questions? Check out 600sqmi.com or e-mail us at photoshow (at) houstonist (dot) com.

Tuesday's Rut

Tuesday evening, EvV+ShD ventured into the Heights to do a little scouting. At the corner of 6th and Rutland, the team found a place called The Chicken Shack. The building is abandoned, but at the end of the street facing the interstate, a good amount of debris was found. EvV created a multiple exposure of a can with his Holga; ShD was drawn to the mailbox of a former home. Point A in the below map marks this location, 509 1/2 Rutland. The building in the top right of the image is the Chicken Shack.

There were other things of interest that were found, but not photographed with film. EvV+ShD want to come back when StR and StW can come along. Here are other images that were made with an iPhone for StR.

Ship Channel Scandals

Monday evening, 3 photographers (C,E,S) ventured out to the Wayside/Lawndale/Avenue Q area. After some exploration of the refineries (the group insisted they were passing time waiting on a train), the individuals found themselves beneath a bridge on the perimeter of a car graveyard/landfill. With cameras in hand, the individuals were approached by a middle-aged male on a golf cart. The male informed the photographers that they would not be able to take pictures of the bridge. "We just want to photograph all those cars in the landfill" E stated. After a couple of minutes of chit-chat, the individuals were allowed to take several images while the golf cart patrol watched over them like a guardian angel. "Last week an officer was shot in the face," he explained to the group. "That was right here." Somewhat shaken, the photographers collected their images, and left the scene once a second golf cart male arrived. To balance the shakes of fear, the group stopped off to have supplies for a sugar/caffeine rush: one brew coffee, a Starbucks double shot, an Icee (which later became a Lawndale Icee), Gardettos, and a drumstick. The journey continued on in this area, but only for a short period of time, as a truck was suspiciously following the Echomobile around.

The next image is of 2520 Park Street - a home that was recently demolished in 77006.
